(Jpn). "A symbolic gesture of reverence, representing the unity of body and mind, in which the hands are joined at the palms, fingers extended, and placed near the breast."

"'Palms of the hands placed together'; Buddhist expression for the ancient gesture of greeting, request, gratitude, veneration, or supplication common in many cultures (particularly in the East). In this gesture, a state of mind is spontaneously manifested that suggests the unity of the antithetical forces of the phenomenal world."
