KAMAKURA,镰仓

"Important period of Japanese history (1185-1335) when the rise of the Shoguns (military dictators) made Kamakura, a city on the sea to the south of Tokyo, a second capital which drew teachers and artists from the seat of the Emperor in Kyoto. Here Buddhist Schools from China, notably Rinzai Zen, found a new home. Here was the birthplace of the Samurai cult and the rise in importance of Judo and Kendo. Engakuji (a famous Rinzai Temple) was founded here in 1282, and the Daibutsu (or great Amitabha statue) was erected in 1252." .
