Sanjie jiao; the "teaching of the three levels; a movement begun by 信行 Xinxing (540-594); the three levels refer to levels of capacity, viz., 1) capacity for practice of the ekaya^na teachings for those of superior capacity, 2) capacity for practice of the triya^na 三乘 for those who, while not of the superior capacity of the ekaya^na 一乘 bodhisattvas, are yet capable of accurate discernment and discrimination of truth from falsity, and 3) no capacity, or rather the lowest capacity, the capacity for breaking the precepts and holding false views; the first two categories are called the 别法 biefa, teachings which distinguish or separate truth from falsity and the last category, the teachings for the beings of the third level capacity, are referred to as the 普法 pufa, the teachings based on the universal truth of all things as dharmaka^ya 法身, appropriate for those who, "blind from birth 生盲" are unable to tell true from false.
