Congshen, more popularly known as Zhaozhou 赵州 (d. 897). A Tang period Chan master, one of the most oft-cited figures in Chan history, whose name appears regularly in such works as the Wumen guan 无门关 and Biyan lu 碧巖录. He was a disciple of Mazu daoyi 马祖道一and spent the major part of his teaching career at Guanyinyuan 观音院in Zhaozhou 赵州. His posthumous title was Zhenji dashi 真际大师, and he left behind a three fascicle teaching record.
