（1） To subdue， overcome， suppress， defeat （abhibhava， nigraha）. This term is often used in reference to the subduing of afflictions. When it is paired with the term 断 it indicates a preliminary， or partial degree of elimination， as the latter term refers to the complete and final eradication of the afflictions， as opposed to their mere suppression. In this technical sense， it is synonymous with 治.
