The eighty minor marks of the Buddha's body (a/si^ty-anuvyan~jana^ni), which are said to take one hundred great kalpas to develop. The list of the eighty characteristics are not found in the early sutras but is referred to quite often in the Buddha biographies and the Mahayana sutras. It may have own its origin to the Sarvastivadins, but it is much more frequently used in the Mahayana literature. {I} The first sutra in which the full list of the eighty characteristics is found is perhaps the Abhinis!kraman!a-su^tra 佛本行集经, the most comprehensive Buddha biography in the Chinese Buddhist canon. There is a summary translation by S.
