The "four noble truths" (a^rya-satya) which form the main content of the Buddha's first sermon given at Ba^ra^n!asi^: the truth of suffering (duh!kha) 苦谛, the truth of the arising of suffering (samudaya) 集谛, the truth of the cessation of suffering (nirodha) 灭谛, and the truth of the path to the cessation of suffering (ma^rga) 道谛.
