A transliteration of the Sanskrit term /samatha which means 'calm abiding' or 'stabilization.' Stopping the wandering of the mind and focusing it on one object， thus bringing about a condition of quietude. In Chinese Buddhist literature it is usually rendered with the ideographs 止 and 定.
