vitarka and vica^ra， two conditions of meditation， which are investigation and analysis. These are two kinds of mental functions whose nature is not inherently good or evil 不定法. They usually operate in tandem with each other， as， when one views an object， one first ascertains it roughly， and then scrutinizes it in detail.
