'Mind-king.' The overall cognitive function of one's consciousness, as opposed to the distinctive mental functions which belong to it (called 心所). In the Abhidharmako/sa- bha^sya 俱舍论, only one mind-king is conceived, but the Faxiang 法相 sect establishes eight, one for each of the eight consciousnesses. There is no such term as 'mind-king' in Indian Buddhism.
