(4) In Buddhist texts, it is often used with a negative connotation to indicate the mistakenly emotive and discriminating consciousness manifested by unenlightened sentient beings, in contrast to the Buddha, who lacks discrimination and mistaken emotion. In Kihwa's Hyon chong non (显正论), 情is defined extensively in contrast to "nature" (性), where "nature" is seen as essence and discrimination/emotion is seen as incorrect function (of the human mind).
