(1) A transliteration of the Sanskrit deva, which means "god." (2) Used in Buddhism as an abbreviated indicator of longer names such as: (a) 提婆达多Devadatta, S/a^kyamuni's cousin; (b) 圣提婆a^ryadeva, the third century Indian monk who was a disciple of Na^ga^rjuna and author of such works as the Bailun 百论 and the Guangbailun 广百论. He is usually regarded as de facto founder of the Ma^dhyamika school 中观派. (c) 大天 Maha^deva.
