The Central Indian state of Vai/sa^li^， inhabited by the Licchavi^ people. One of the sixteen major states at the time of S/a^kyamuni Buddha. The capital， also called Vai/sa^li^ 毗舍离城， the site of much Buddhist teaching activity， was located in the present-day Besarb， twenty-seven miles north of Patna.
