Va^ra^n!asi^， an ancient Indian state， located west of Magadha 摩揭陀 and north of Ko/sala. The capital， also called Va^ra^n!asi^， is the present day Benares. It was here where S/a^kyamuni first taught the contents of his enlightenment to the original five disciples.
