A Buddhist council which is held to settle questions of orthodoxy （Skt. sam!gi^ti; Pali sam!gi^ti）， also expressed in Chinese as 作集法， 集法藏， 结经， and 经典结集. There are three major categories: （1） The councils of early Indian （"Lesser Vehicle"） Buddhism 小乘经结集; （2） The councils of Maha^ya^na Buddhism 大乘经结集; and （3） The Councils of Esoteric Buddhism 秘密经结集. Within the first category， the Buddhist tradition records four: The First Council 第一结集 at Ra^jagr!ha， the Second Council 第二结集 at Vai/sa^li^， the Third Council 第三结集 at Pa^t!aliputra， and the Fourth Council 第四结集， held in Ka/smi^ra.
