A Buddhist council which is held to settle questions of orthodoxy (Skt. sam!gi^ti; Pali sam!gi^ti), also expressed in Chinese as 作集法, 集法藏, 结经, and 经典结集. There are three major categories: (1) The councils of early Indian ("Lesser Vehicle") Buddhism 小乘经结集; (2) The councils of Maha^ya^na Buddhism 大乘经结集; and (3) The Councils of Esoteric Buddhism 秘密经结集. Within the first category, the Buddhist tradition records four: The First Council 第一结集 at Ra^jagr!ha, the Second Council 第二结集 at Vai/sa^li^, the Third Council 第三结集 at Pa^t!aliputra, and the Fourth Council 第四结集, held in Ka/smi^ra.
