自在

(1) Translated into English as "freedom," "omnipotence," but it is difficult to find the adequate expression to deliver the meaning of zizai . What is being referred to by this term is the ability of a buddha to function throughout the universe in any way without impediment. For example, a buddha has all kinds of "supernatural powers" (神通), such as knowing the past and future, reading minds, etc. But in Buddhism, the reason such "powers" are possible is not because of the development of great personal power on the part of a buddha, but because of his or her realization of the world to be completely interpenetrated (通). Thus, the unhindered function of a buddha is nothing other than an expression of the reality of the universe. (2) The name of a god in the Lotus Sutra. [法华经 T 262.9.2a17]
