Gyo^ga （729―803） monk of the Hosso^ sect 法相宗. Originally a student of Eigon 永严， from whom he received the full precepts at the age of 20. He also studied Yoga^ca^ra doctrine with Byo^bi 平备， who was originally a Ko^fuku-ji monk. At 25 years old he received imperial permission to travel to China， where he studied Yoga^ca^ra and Tiantai for seven years， after which he returned to Japan， bringing with him more than 100 fascicles of scriptural texts. After this time， he would have more than 30 disciples. At the age of 63 he became the abbot of Ko^fuku-ji 兴福寺， a position he held until his passing away at the age of 75. He was a prolific writer， producing the Hokeko^san 法华弘赞 （20 fascicles）， Yuishikironyoki 唯识论余记 （30 fascicles）， Jo^myo^kyo^ ryakusan 净名经略赞 （5 fascicles）， Jinno^ hannya ryakusan 仁王般若略赞 （3 fascicles）， Hyappo^ ronchu^ 百法论注 （2 fascicles）， Yuishikigiki 唯识义晖 （1 fascicle）， Yuishiki su^yo^gi 唯识枢要义 （1 fascicle）， Yuishikigisho^ 唯识义精 （1 fascicle）， Yuishikihiryo^ 唯识比量 （1 fascicle）， Hokeronshaku 法华论释 （1 fascicle）， and Igiko^ shinsho^ 遗伪兴真章 （1 fascicle）， etc.
