道场


(1) Literally, "site of enlightenment;" the place where enlightenment is achieved. This refers initially to the ground under the bodhi tree, where the Buddha was seated at the time of achieving his full enlightenment (bodhi-man!d!a). (2) A place where religious practice is carried out, or where the Buddha is worshipped. A place where the precepts are given. In his work on the Lotus Sutra, Gene Reeves has identified the following translations of the term: seat of wisdom ; wisdom throne; truth-plot; platform of the Path; place of practice; place of enlightenment; terrace of enlightenment; and place of awakening.
