Sudden enlightenment. Enlightenment which is attained instantly， without reliance on dualistic， goal-oriented constructs. Exponents of the sudden teaching hold that the bona fide Buddhist enlightenment can only be attained in this way. There are various theories， however， regarding the relationship of sudden enlightenment to gradual practice 渐修 explained by numerous teachers in the East Asian meditational traditions.
