Mazu Daoyi (707-786); One of the most influential Chan masters in the history of Chinese Buddhism, originally the student of Huairang 怀让 of Nanyue 南岳. He is said to have had some 139 disciples--many of them who would become eminent teachers in their own right. His style of Chan had a deep influence on early Korean Son Buddhism, as many early Korean masters studied under Mazu and his students.
